UN Negotiations on Nuclear Weapons Treaty
We are entering the final week of negotiations in New York, where representatives from over 140 countries have worked on the treaty. A new draft text was just released, you can read it here .
The text categorically prohibits nuclear weapons, provides a pathway for states with nuclear weapons to join and destroy their nuclear arsenals and includes a strong provision for victim assistance and environmental remediation.
While some details are still up for discussion and final negotiations might still change some provisions, this text raises expectations that governments should be able to adopt a strong, robust treaty on Friday 7 July.
