Keep Rocky Flats Wildlife Refuge Closed to the Public
by LeRoy Moore, PhD
Much of the site of the former Rocky Flats nuclear bomb plant has been transferred to US Fish and Wildlife Service to operate as a wildlife refuge. FWS intends to open the refuge for public recreation.
This decision should be reversed because of the plutonium remaining in the environment at Rocky Flats site.
The "cleanup" of the site was inadequate for two main reasons:
1) the standards for permissible exposure to plutonium established for the site are not sufficiently protective for the most vulnerable people, especially children likely to visit the refuge if it is opened to the public; and
2) those responsible for the Rocky Flats "cleanup" ignored or did not have access to a large amount of significant data about conditions at the site. Hence, the Rocky Flats wildlife refuge should remain closed to the public.
